At ActivateCTE, we are proud to highlight the exemplary contributions of one of our founders, Jason Blackwell, in his role as a teacher and mentor at Escambia County High School. This week, under Jason’s guidance, students from the school’s SkillsUSA carpentry class undertook a significant community service project—constructing picnic tables for Tom Byrne Park in Atmore.
Jason Blackwell’s commitment to integrating real-world applications into education shines through in this project. With his leadership, students from ninth to twelfth grade were given lumber donated by the city of Atmore, which enabled them to apply their carpentry skills towards a tangible community benefit. This initiative allowed the students to focus on their craft and highlighted the strong partnership between the city and its young residents, a testament to Jason’s ability to foster collaborative relationships.
Over the course of more than a week, the students, driven by enthusiasm and determination, took charge of the entire process—from the initial design and planning stages to the final construction of the picnic tables. Jason’s approach to education, focusing on hands-on learning and practical experience, was evident as he steered his students through this project. “This is different than your typical classroom,” Jason noted, emphasizing the unique learning environment he cultivates, centered around active participation and real-world impact.
The project perfectly aligns with SkillsUSA’s mission, which Jason passionately supports, to empower members to become world-class workers, leaders, and responsible citizens. It provided the students with invaluable experience in community service, preparing them not just as skilled carpenters but as engaged and responsible members of their community.

The finished picnic tables, soon to be a new addition to the city park, will serve as a lasting symbol of the hard work and community spirit fostered by Jason’s mentorship. The project enhances the park’s utility and aesthetic. It is a testament to the powerful impact of educational initiatives that go beyond the classroom to improve communal spaces and strengthen community bonds.
City officials praised the students for their hard work and the collaborative nature of the project, a reflection of the leadership and vision imparted by Jason Blackwell. “The initiative shown by the students of Escambia County High School exemplifies the kind of community engagement and leadership we aim to encourage in our youth,” they commented, acknowledging the project’s lasting contribution to the community.
At ActivateCTE, we recognize and celebrate the dedication of leaders like Jason Blackwell, whose innovative teaching strategies and commitment to community engagement play a crucial role in shaping the future of our students and the broader community. Through projects like these, Jason continues to demonstrate the profound impact of combining education with civic responsibility, embodying the core values of ActivateCTE.
